THC FUTURE STARS SUMMER HOCKEY PROGRAM
Designed for the driven athlete 7 to 10 years old. The goal of the program is to develop the fundamental skills necessary to excel in hockey and to become an overall great athlete by developing good work habits. This includes skating at top speed while handling the puck and using vision skills to see the play develop in front of you. Great athletes have the ability to see and react to the things going on around them and move in all directions quickly and efficiently. Our goal is to develop the qualities that great athletes have. Athletes train two times per week and the program runs from July 3rd to August 23rd.

On-Ice Training Components

  • Fundamentals including shooting, passing, and stickhandling.
  • Teaching techniques that focus on the foundation of all skating skills; awareness, control, and mastery of edges.
  • Power skating including balance, full strides, edge control, backwards, cross-overs, starting and stopping and sharp turns.
  • Transitional drills will emphasize the importance of high speed movement in multiple directions. Quick starts, quick feet, pivoting and turning will make up the foundation of explosive speed.
  • Shooting; quick release, one-timers, rebounds, and deflections will allow players to perfect their game in and around the net.
  • One-touch passing, quick hands, puck protection, and giving and receiving various types of passes, will allow players to develop confidence with the puck.
  • Checking, battle drills, and small area games emphasizing the importance of proper body and stick position.
  • Specific forward and defence drills that encourage puck control with speed, quick puck movement and competition to fine tune those skills before the season starts.

Off-Ice Training Components

Focus Fitness Training Components

  • Each Focus Fitness training session will be 45 minutes in length.
  • Aerobic Conditioning to enhance optimal recovery every shift in a hockey game.
  • Anaerobic Conditioning to improve speed, agility, quickness and power for faster starts, a greater top speed, better lateral movement and explosiveness.
  • Fundamental Strength Exercises targeting the lower body, upper body, and core area, to build a solid foundation to become a bigger, faster, stronger hockey player.

Off-Ice Training Components

THC

Each THC training session will be 45 minutes in length and will use each of the stations in our centre including the Speed Ramp, Shooting Bays, Stickhandling and Slide Boards/Multi Purpose area. THC has become the place to go for skill improvement in Winnipeg. There is no other place in the province like it. Where else can you handle a puck or ball for an hour at a time or shoot between 150 and 200 shots, with instructors ensuring quality repetitions throughout your sessions. It would take multiple hockey practices to even come close to those numbers and dozens of games. Our unique computerized instant feedback system allows players to see their best score at a particular station and motivates them to try and beat their best scores each time they come to train.

THC STATIONS:

SPEED RAMP: The patent-pending Speed Ramp improves first-step skating quickness through an inclined ramp with a glide factor to ice of 90%. Our instructors will teach the appropriate technique so that every repetition on the speed ramp is done correctly. Full hip extension, low body position, and proper arm swing are key ingredients to become a fast skater.

SLIDE BOARDS: The slide board is an excellent training system to enhance an athlete’s stride as well as hone his vision skills. The slide board training system is crucial to player development. Athletes will improve speed, lateral movement, leg power, and lower body endurance on the slide boards.

SHOOTING STATIONS: The best shooters are the best players. The shooting stations feature three different areas working different skill sets (speed rated, pass & shoot, and accuracy rated). Score more goals by learning how to release the puck quickly and accurately.

STICK HANDLING STATION: The stick handling area features large puck-like obstacles and attack triangles that can be reconfigured at a moments notice. Having quick hands, being creative, and reacting quickly will ensure that athletes have the proper tool box of skills when it comes down to playing in game situations.

MULTI-PURPOSE STATION: The multi purpose station is where we can work on many different skills required for the game of hockey. It can be used to work on quickness, agility, balance, hand eye co-ordination and as well as stick handling. It’s the little things, the intangibles that make great players.
